Waitangi Weekend

Finally a new long weekend and this time it is not due to a little guy called Jesus being born. This time it is because the Maoris and the Poms signed an peace agreement "Treaty of Waitangi", on the 6th of February in 1840. Good stuff! Bring on some more holidays.

Dave left his beach in Whangamata and came and visited to see some mountains again. Christchurch is not the best for that so we escaped through the beautiful Arthur's Pass (view of Otira gorge with flowering rata trees above) to Okarito, where I actually happened to be exactly a year ago for Clare's hen's do. It's an awesome little white baiting community (en speciell typ av fisk som anses vara en delikatess som man kan fanga langs kusten). We pitched the tent, cranked up a bottle of wine and enjoyed some good food while the sandflies were enjoying our company as well.

My friend Clare left Chch a few months ago to become a guide on the Frans Josef Glacier so we took the chance to catch up with her. Ben, Rachel, Geoff and Marcel were also there and we had beer pancakes to get energized before we headed up the glacier with Clare and her other guide friend Cathrine.

The glacier was awsome and we got to see some nice little hollows and cracks. The ice was so beautiful and I felt a bit homesick for Sweden. We crossed some dodgy parts as well when Clare was trying not to freak out. The rest of us were just a bit too naive to realise the danger. Noone got hurt, that's the main thing.

Above: Marcel and I enjoying the spectacular ice
Below: Rachel and ben, Clare, tasty ice and Dave at the end.

We also had a absolutely stunning time in Punakaiki with eating fresh mussles by the beach, admiring the sunset and fighting sandflies. I love the West Coast. We had a few stops when Dave had the chance to do some gold panning while I did the cooking. Gosh! It's hard to be a woman!

I went up to the North Island together with Dave since I had some work to do in Palmerston North. We spent a couple of days at Thea's farm outside Levin. I really got in to gardening when I was there. That was a new feeling to me. I have never really spent time cutting hedges and stuff before. Hopefully I will own a big garden at some point in my life..not yet though, I am still too slack to even care about our tiny court yard :-)
