Before I left my job in Chch and New Zealand to go on a 2.5 months' holiday I had some wicked times around Canterbury:
Punakaiki at Steve Pawson's 30th. Te Nikau Retreat is a great place to have a party!!
Hapuku River Valley> Kowai Saddle> Kowhai Hut behind Mt Fyffe, Kaikoura
Time to get out and about again over Queen's birthday. The weather was great despite all the talk about gusty southerlies. It was a beautiful easy tramp from Hapuku River to Kowai Hut. The tricky part was to hitch hike from Kaikoura a few kms up the road!! The following day, Charlie and I boshed up a hill along some wet, muddy pig tracks to get as high as possible. It was wet and very very cold. The views were great and the sleeping bag even better when we got back to Kowai Hut.
